Inspired by all-girl singing groups of the 1930s, the term "girl group" was first popularized during the late 50s. In the 1960s, girl groups became a musical phenomenon that swept the nation. With the support of several talented songwriters and producers, coupled with their outstanding ability to harmonize, the girl group sound topped the billboard charts. Girl groups are still a popular style of music today.
